2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Sir Ernest Shackleton's historic ill-fated expedition to Antarctica. This October, Portland Story Theater founder Lawrence Howard brings back Shackleton's Antarctic Nightmare, the true, epic tale of Ernest Shackleton and the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914.

This show is a special send-off for Lawrence Howard as he journeys to Ireland to meet Shackleton's granddaughter, see Shackleton's birth place, and visit the Athy Heritage Centre-Museum.

Created and Told by LAWRENCE HOWARD

Lawrence Howard is a storyteller and Polar historian living in the Pacific Northwest. He has been mesmerizing audiences with stories of Antarctica since 2008. These are not history lectures, but rollicking good stories of adventure and derring-do; heroes' journeys that make us all step back and admire the indomitable human spirit.

“From the moment the performance started, I was completely caught up in it.”

In 2008, Lawrence Howard parlayed his lifelong obsession with the Heroic Era of Antarctic Exploration - an interest he inherited from his father - into the Armchair Adventurer series, a trilogy of gripping tales including Shackleton's Antarctic Nightmare, Mawson's Mettle, and Polar Opposites. Quoting extensively from the diaries and journals of both officers and crew members, Howard captures the human drama of the expeditions and pays homage to the memories of men whose courage seems almost impossible in our 21st century world.

A captivating performer, Howard holds his audiences spellbound. Performances throughout Oregon and off-Broadway in New York have been met with packed houses and standing ovations. But it’s the thoroughness and accuracy of his research and his natural gift for bringing the stories alive that keeps listeners entranced.

"Howard's knowledge of his subject and his unbounded enthusiasm are a gift to the audience; but those in attendance gave much back, as evidenced by the post-show crowd that enthusiastically clustered around him. It's a great day when simple storytelling satisfies the soul like this." The Oregonian

Listener Discretion Advised: Portland Story Theater's stories may contain "colorful" language, sexual escapades of a questionable nature and numerous examples of extremely poor judgment, along with profound insights, deep revelations and moments of truth, triumph and transformation.
